5 Flooring Mistakes I Made (So You Don't Have To)
A comic diary of my first DIY flooring project โ total disaster โ total success
โก TL;DR โ The 30-Second Version
I thought installing flooring was easy. Buy some planks, click them together, done. Right? ...Wrong. Here's my journey, drawn out so you can learn from my mistakes.
๐ญ โThis room is about 12x14... let's call it 160 sq ft and buy exactly that much!โ
I measured the room once and didn't add a waste factor.
Measure twice. Always add 10-15% waste factor for cuts, mistakes, and odd corners. Let the calculator handle the math.
๐ญ โThe floor looks flat enough... let's just start laying!โ
Skipped subfloor prep. The old floor looked flat enough.
Check level (3/16โณ max variation over 10 ft), test moisture, use self-leveling compound. $15 now > $500 redo later.
๐ญ โSnug against the wall looks cleaner, right?โ
Butted planks tight against every wall. Looked clean for 3 months.
Leave 1/4โณ (6mm) gap around all walls, doorways, transitions. Baseboards hide the gap โ that's their entire purpose.
A 20-ft oak floor expands over ยฝโณ between winter and summer.
That gap isn't optional โ it's physics.
๐ญ โLongways with the hallway... wait, that makes it look even narrower!โ
Ran planks parallel to the long wall. Room looked like a bowling alley.
Run perpendicular to the main window light source, parallel to primary sight line when entering. Rooms feel wider, seams vanish in natural light.
๐ญ โ150 sq ft... plus 10%... that's 165... wait, 15% is... uhh...โ
Mental math at the hardware store. Bought nearly 30% too many boxes.
Enter room dimensions once โ get the exact box count. The calculator factors in waste percentage automatically.
๐ โThis time I used the calculator. Look at this floor!โ
โ The Happy Ending
Round two: I measured properly, leveled the subfloor, left expansion gaps, ran planks the right direction, and used the calculator for exact quantities. The floor looks professional and I saved money on materials. Lesson learned: measure twice, calculate once.
๐ Scoreboard: Take 1 vs. Take 2
| Check | Take 1 โ Winged It | Take 2 โ Planned & Calculated |
|---|---|---|
| Measured | โ Guessed once | โ Twice + waste factor |
| Subfloor | โ Skipped entirely | โ Leveled & moisture-tested |
| Expansion | โ Tight to wall | โ 1/4โณ gap all around |
| Direction | โ Parallel to long wall | โ Perpendicular to window |
| Materials | โ Mental math | โ Calculator โ exact count |
| Total Cost | Hundreds wasted | On budget + leftovers for repairs |
