Starter Handbook

2026 Edition · Beginner to Millionaire

Los Santos Guide © 2026 · v2.1

This guide covers the essential strategies, tips, and step-by-step progressions for new GTA Online players in 2026.

Chapter 1

Getting Started in Los Santos

Grand Theft Auto Online drops you into the criminal underworld of Los Santos with little more than a phone and a dream. Your first hours will determine how quickly you build wealth. Here's exactly what to do.

Character Creation

Your character's appearance has zero impact on gameplay, so don't overthink it. Pick a look and move on. The real choice is your starting path.

The First Mission

You'll be greeted by Lamar Davis and immediately thrown into "Franklin and Lamar." This tutorial mission introduces driving, shooting, and basic mechanics. Complete it, and you'll have $20,000-$50,000 in starter cash depending on the current bonus offers.

💡 Pro Tip: As of 2026, new players receive a $500,000 welcome bonus automatically. Check your in-game email (pause menu → Money & Services) to claim it.

Enable 2FA for Free Money

Link your Rockstar Social Club account and enable two-factor authentication. Rockstar rewards this with a one-time $500,000 bonus. It takes 2 minutes and doubles your starting cash.

Chapter 2

The Best First Businesses

Your first business purchase is the most important financial decision you'll make in GTA Online. Buy the wrong one and you'll struggle. Here's the optimal order.

BusinessCostDaily IncomeBuy First?
Kosatka Submarine$2,200,000$1,000,000+/hr✓ Yes — unlocks Cayo Perico
CEO Office + Vehicle Warehouse$2,000,000$240,000/hrSecond
Nightclub$1,200,000$50,000/day (passive)Third (after upgrades)
Agency$2,010,000$300,000/hrFourth
Acid Lab$1,450,000$350,000/hrAlternative start

The Kosatka Strategy

The Kosatka submarine is your single best investment. It unlocks The Cayo Perico Heist — the only heist that can be completed entirely solo with a $1,000,000+ payout per hour. Save every dollar until you own one.

💡 Pro Tip: Always do the Cayo Perico heist on Hard Mode. The set-up fee is the same ($25,000) but the payout is 10% higher. To activate Hard Mode, start the heist within 10 minutes of completing the previous one.
Chapter 3

Best First Vehicles

Don't waste money on cars early on. Your first vehicle should be practical, not pretty. Here's what to buy and what to skip.

VehiclePriceWhy
Sparrow (Helicopter)$1,815,000Fits inside Kosatka, fastest way to grind
Armored Kuruma (Car)$525,000 (trade)Bulletproof — best for missions
Oppressor MK II (Motorcycle)$3,890,000Endgame grind vehicle, buy after businesses
Buzzard Attack Chopper$1,750,000Spawn instantly as CEO, great value

Don't Buy These Yet

Supercars, yacht, hangar aircraft, arena war vehicles — these are endgame luxuries. A new player buying a $2,000,000 supercar is the #1 mistake that slows progression.

💡 Pro Tip: Buy the Armored Kuruma at the "Dune Buggy" trade price by completing the "Fleeca Job" heist as host. You'll save $155,000.
Chapter 4

Weekly Activities Routine

GTA Online updates every Thursday at 10 AM UTC. Here's your weekly checklist to maximize income.

Thursday (Update Day)

  • Check Rockstar Newswire for double money events
  • Spin the Lucky Wheel at The Diamond Casino (free every day)
  • Collect the free prize at your Gun Van location

Daily

  • Nightclub safe collection ($50,000+ per day)
  • Agency safe collection ($5,000-$10,000 per day)
  • Acid Lab production refill
  • Street dealers — sell them your cached product

Weekly Priority

  • Do the Featured Series for 3x money
  • Complete Time Trials ($100,000-$200,000)
  • Check Casino Podium Vehicle — might win a free car
  • Complete the Gun Van challenge
💡 Pro Tip: Visit your nightclub popularity missions every 2 days. Keeping popularity above 90% maximizes the daily safe income at $50,000. It takes 2 minutes and beats any passive investment in the game.
Chapter 5

Hidden Mechanics & Efficiency Tips

Request Vehicle Cooldown

Your Personal Vehicle has a 2-second cooldown between requests. The Mechanic has a 5-minute cooldown. Always use the Personal Vehicle interaction menu for faster access.

CEO/VIP Work

Headhunter and Sightseer missions pay $20,000-$25,000 and take 5 minutes. Run these while your businesses produce in the background. Use the Buzzard or Oppressor for fastest completion.

The "Find Session" Trick

If you're stuck in a laggy or hostile lobby, use the "Find New Session" option in the pause menu. You'll keep all your mission progress and un-sold product. Never use "Leave GTA Online" — that's slower.

First-person Mode

In certain heist preps and missions, first-person mode makes you run slightly faster. Use it for time-sensitive missions. The difference is small but can save 10-15 seconds on speedruns.

Quick GPS

Open your interaction menu (hold M or touchpad) → Inventory → Player Interaction → Waypoint. Set your spawn location to your last location to avoid long drives from the hospital after death.

💡 Pro Tip: Buy snacks from any convenience store and armor from Ammu-Nation. In missions, open your interaction menu → Inventory → Snacks/Armor to heal up without pausing. This works during combat!
Chapter 6

30-Day Roadmap to Millions

Follow this plan and you'll be a GTA Online millionaire within a month.

Beyond Week 4: Add the Agency, Acid Lab, and bunker. At this point you can buy any vehicle or property you want. Welcome to the top 1% of Los Santos.

💡 Pro Tip: Use the in-game stock market (BAWSAQ and LCN) with Lester's assassination missions. This can multiply your savings by 3-5x in the endgame. Don't do these until you've completed the story mode.
